Ex-Celtics coach Doc Rivers to be played by Laurence Fishburne in new Donald Sterling docuseries

When former Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers left the team he won a title with in 2008, he certainly thought he was headed to greener pastures, even discounting the lightning-fast rebuild orchestrated by his successor Brad Stevens notwithstanding.

Little did he know he would be walking into a hornet’s nest of controversy that would see the ouster of the team owner of the franchise he chose to helm in place of the Celtics — Donald Sterling and the Los Angeles Clippers. We all know the tale of what came next for Doc and the Clippers as Sterling’s sordid comments and patterns of behavior came to light, but now that saga will be dramatized for the masses in a new docu-series that will cast actor Lawrence Fishburne as the former Boston coach, per Variety’s Joe Otterson.

“The six-episode series tells the … story of Doc Rivers … and the … Clippers’ quest to bring a championship to one of the … worst franchises in all of sports,” writes Otterson.

Set “during the … downfall of … Sterling,” the show focuses on his “racist behavior … amid the power struggle between his wife of 60+ years, Shelly Sterling … and his mistress, V. Stiviano.”
