Ex-Celtics assistant Lue interviewing with Rockets next week for HC gig

Former Boston Celtics assistant coach and current Los Angeles Clippers assistant Ty Lue may be headed East after early reports he would be the favorite to take over as head coach of his current franchise after fellow Celtics alumnus Doc Rivers stepped down in that role.

The former Celtics head coach wasn’t unemployed for very long, though.

Rivers recently agreed to join the Philadelphia 76ers as their next head coach to a reported tune of $8 million a year while in the interim Lue has been tied to the Houston Rockets coaching vacancy left by the departure of Mike D’Antoni.

The New York Times’ Mark Stein reports that Lue is scheduled to meet with the Rockets’ brass next week, while Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown has interviewed with Los Angeles already, having made a strong impression.

No word on the shifting expectations regarding Lue and the Clippers, but as one of the more in-demand names on the market, it seems probable the former Celtic assistant will be a head coach again by the start of the 2020-21 NBA season.
