Ex-Celtic star Leigh Nicol bravely shares horrific online abuse after images leaked

Former Celtic star Leigh Nicol has bravely shared some of the horrific abuse she receives on social media after private images of her were leaked online.

The Crystal Palace star took to Twitter to shine light on the vile comments she receives in a bid to show how online communication needs to change.

It comes after the 25-year-old previously took a year away from football in 2019 after her iCloud was hacked and pictures of her were shared on vile adult sites.

In a new Tweet today, Leigh, from Bellshill in Lanarkshire, posted a range of screenshots with a warning for the ‘sensitive content’.

She tweeted: “I keep these to myself, because I don’t want kids on my profiles seeing these & I also don’t want kids not to be able to follow me.

“But, here’s my own personal experiences in the last few days as a small reason why change needs to happen for a safer space.”

One disgusting troll told the midfielder: "Hope your parents are proud of you. I feel bad when your niece and nephew grow up to watch you".

The former Celtic academy star also shared a longer message on Instagram.

She wrote: "This used to cause extreme distress, but now it’s part of my day to day life, and one that I don’t blink an eye lid to anymore."

She added: "Enough is enough. For our black friends, and those receiving abuse for how they look, perform, live their lives, and quite simply- breathing.”

Many responded with message of support for Leigh.

Matt Himsworth, who runs B5 - a sports consultancy firm of which Leigh is an Associate Director - shared the tweet.

He said: "We discussed at length whether or not to post these reprehensible messages Leigh receives (they keep coming).

"We agreed on a warning and redaction. This is a time of fierce debate about how safe it is to be a woman, a sportsperson and a public figure online. This is every day."
