Ex-Celtic star Leigh Griffiths scores again as Mandurah City put on five-star show

Leigh Griffiths was on target once again as Mandurah City put on a five-star show.

The former Celtic striker rolled back the years in the last outing as he netted a stunning 30-yard free-kick against Rockingham City FC and he was once again on the scoresheet with a typical goal of the ex-Scotland international in a thumping win over Joondalup United.

After collecting the ball in a position on the touchline, the ex-Hoops man skipped by the defender before taking on an effort from the angle of the box. The goalkeeper managed to get a hand to the shot but was unable to stop it from nestling in the top corner as Griffiths put his side three goals up before the break.

John Baird - a name familiar with Scottish football fans and first-team coach at the club - opened the scoring with Joe O'Brien, Shaun Mukwevho and Robbie Galvin also on target in the thumping win.

The result moves them to within one point of the WA State League Division 1 summit after seven games. Griffiths and Co have won five and lost two from their opening batch of games with leaders Western Knights on five wins, one draw and one defeat.

Next up is Sorrento on Wednesday in the WA Australia Cup Preliminary rounds fifth round before a clash with Gwelup Croatia next weekend.

Fremantle City in third spot battered leaders Western Knights 5-1 to inflict a first defeat on them this season and open the race at the top wide open at this early stage.
