Ex-Celtic star Kieran Tierney must be Arsenal captain admits Gunners legend as he makes Granit Xhaka claim

Nigel Winterburn has called for Kieran Tierney to be appointed Arsenal captain.

The Gunners legend, and fellow left-back, believes the Muirhouse ace is the best candidate with doubts surrounding the future of club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon international has been linked with Barcelona and he missed Arsenal's Premier League defeat against Brentford amidst mysterious circumstances.

Granit Xhaka wore the armband on Friday but he's previously been stripped of the honour and Winterburn has backed supporters calls for Tierney to be appointed captain.

He said: “Some Arsenal supporters will never forgive him, and others are already calling for Kieran Tierney to become captain.

“You don't need to be massively vocal; a captain can lead by example, and Tierney is someone who does so.

“I couldn't quite believe it myself; I was surprised to see Xhaka being given the armband back, but that probably says a lot about who else is there to step up and take it.

“For some players when you give them the captaincy, they step up.

“For me, the only other possible captain is Kieran Tierney. Where else could it go?

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is club captain, but there's questions being asked of him, and we’re still guessing where he and Alexandre Lacazette are.

“We’ve had very few updates on what type of illness they’re suffering.

“Friday night, both Smith Rowe and Tierney were Arsenal’s best performers.

“It’s also vital that Arsenal keep hold of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Tierney

“Both Saka and Smith Rowe are on long-term contracts at Arsenal, which will keep them around for a few more years."
