Ex-Celtic star Anthony Stoke's stalking trial postponed as he awaits covid test results

Former Celtic star Anthony Stokes has seen his trial for allegedly stalking his girlfriend postponed as he awaits the result of a Covid test.

The 32-year-old was due to appear in court over claims involving his ex-partner Eilidh Scott but he is now self-isolating with suspected coronavirus.

Stokes, of Glasgow, is alleged to have contacted Miss Scott by repeatedly sending her emails and text messages in which he swore and uttered offensive remarks.

He is also accused of making telephone calls and sending messages to her parents George and Rachel Scott in which he made offensive and inappropriate remarks about their daughter.

But Stokes' lawyer revealed he is currently awaiting a test for Covid-19 and was unable to attend Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Michael Gallen, defending, added: "He is not present. I spoke to him and he is feeling poorly and, with the symptoms he described to me, I have advised him not to attend and to arrange a Covid test as soon as he can.

"I have asked for confirmation of the test to be sent to me."

Depute fiscal Aga Mathieson agreed to the trial being postponed, adding: "My hands are tied in this situation."

Prosecutors allege Stokes breached orders not to contact Miss Scott or her mother between November and December 2019.

They also claim he breached a ruling keeping him from Miss Scott for four years by sending her an email message in March last year.

The charges also state he allegedly broke bail conditions and the terms of a non-harassment order which was handed out in September 2019.

He denies all of the allegations against him.

As part of his bail conditions he is banned from contacting Miss Scott or her parents in any way and is also banned from entering two streets in Shotts, Lanarkshire, where they stay.

Sheriff Liam Murphy continued the case to a hearing next month.

Stokes won seven trophies in six seasons at Parkhead and netted twice in Hibs' 3-2 Scottish Cup win over Rangers in 2016.
