Ex-Celtic recruitment chief Lee Congerton 'wanted' by Man Utd

Celtic's former head of recruitment is reportedly attracting interest from Manchester United.

The global football giants are looking to appoint a new sporting director in the coming months.

It's expected the Red Devils will push to hire someone for this role after Sir Jim Ratcliffe's major investment in the club is finalised. Britain's wealthiest man is in the process of purchasing a 25 percent stake in United. He will be looking to make big changes to the club’s football structure, which has been heavily criticised since Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill's time at Old Trafford.

And The Telegraph reports that United are considering ex-Celtic transfer guru Lee Congerton for the position.

After a fairly unspectacular playing career, Congerton moved into coaching and had jobs at Wrexham and Liverpool. He then worked as a youth coach at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho in 2005.

He would eventually become chief scout at Stamford Bridger before the Welshman became sporting director of Hamburg and then Sunderland.

Congerton became close to Brendan Rodgers at Chelsea, and it was at Celtic they reunited. He joined as head of recruitment under Rodgers in 2017. He subsequently left for Leicester with him in 2019.

Here, he oversaw deals for Youri Tielemans and Wesley Fofana.

The 50-year-old made a surprising move in 2022 as he joined Atalanta, signing the likes of Merih Demiral, Ademola Lookman and Rasmus Hojlund - who was sold to Man United in the summer.

Meanwhile, five Celtic first-team players tonight featured in a testimonial match against Dundee.

Celtic fielded a select side for a match honouring Cammy Kerr at Dens Park.

And amongst the largely youth squad there were a few first-team players.

Scott Bain played in goal - having played alongside Kerr at Dundee. In defence, Alexandro Bernabei, Stephen Welsh, Yuki Kobayashi and Gustaf Lagerbielke all received minutes for Celtic.
