Ex-Celtic player Kieran Tierney 'proud' as he is announced as SSPCA ambassador

Scots football 'hero' Kieran Tierney has revealed himself as an ambassador for the Scottish SPCA (SSPCA).

The ex- Celtic star revealed his latest role on social media on Wednesday.

Tierney, 24, said he was 'proud' to be working with the charity's 'special investigations' squad who tackle 'crimes against animals '.

The Arsenal left-back said: "I’m proud to be an ambassador for Scotland’s animal welfare charity the Scottish SPCA.

"In 2020, they responded to 78,000 reports of animals in need which is over 210 every day.

"They re-homed almost 4,000 animals and released over 3,000 wild animals back to the wild.

"I’m looking forward to working with their special investigations unit to help raise awareness of crimes against animals."

The Lanarkshire player was pictured sporting a SSPCA black t-shirt emblazoned with his initials.

Fans have praised Tierney in their droves, hailing him as a 'top bloke' and a 'lovely man' for 'using his platform and influence for more than just football'.

One said: "Didn't think it was possible to love Kieran Tierney any more than I already did, but hearing this I do.

"Well done you lovely man."

Another added: "What a hero."

A third said: "Love that, Tierney.

"Use your platform and influence for more than just football.

"That's what I like to see."

Another added: "You’re a top top bloke Kieran."

It comes after Tierney explained his touching shin pad tribute to his dog following Scotland ’s 0-0 draw against England.

Our sister title Glasgow Live told how the national star held up his shin guards as he took the acclaim of the travelling Tartan Army following the Euro 2020 Group D draw at Wembley.

The pads featured a picture of Tierney’s dog, who sadly passed away the week before which made for an emotional couple of days for Tierney and his family ahead of the clash with the Auld Enemy.

He wrote: “His name’s Boston . . . it was sad.

"He was two years old and he died suddenly a few days ago.

"It was a sad moment for me and my family.

"My mum was a wee bit emotional and they still will be for a while."

Tierney added: “People who have dogs know how much family members they are to us, so that was hard.

“I’ll wear them for the whole tournament now.

"They are just something special, just a wee reminder, a wee keepsake for me. It was nice to be able to do that and for my family to see it as well.”

SSPCA chiefs said they 'can't wait to work' with Tierney who is 'genuinely passionate about animals'.

The animal welfare charity released a statement which read: "Introducing our new ambassador, Kieran Tierney.

"Arsenal and Scotland National Team footballer, Kieran is genuinely passionate about animals, so it is fantastic to partner with him.

"We can't wait to work with him in the months ahead on important animal welfare issues."

Tierney came through the Celtic youth system and made his first team debut in April 2015, and his full international debut in March 2016.

In August 2019 he signed for Arsenal for a reported £25 million fee.

Tierney missed Scotland’s tournament opener against the Czech Republic as injury forced him to watch from the sidelines as the hosts slipped to a 2-0 defeat.
