Bild claims Adamu will join Schalke in a deal worth around €800,000, plus add-ons, a report echoed by Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg.
After joining on Deadline Day earlier this year, Adamu made six appearances for Celtic, registering one goal and one assist during his loan spell.
His sole goal came against Dundee at Celtic Park, a late Scottish Cup equaliser which forced extra-time on the night.
Celtic would go on to win the competition last month, with Martin O'Neill singling out the Austrian international post-match.
Across his time with Freiburg, he has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 67 appearances, while he has made nine appearances for his national team since his debut in 2021.
