Ex-Celtic and Motherwell star has died, aged 70

Motherwell and Celtic have paid tribute to former defender Johannes Edvaldsson following his death aged 70.

An Icelandic international, Edvaldsson played for Celtic from 1975 -80 and was at Fir Park for two seasons from 1982-84.

Capped 34 times for his country, 'Shuggy' played 127 times for the Glasgow giants and 65 times for Motherwell, before retiring in 1985.

After a short spell in management he returned to Scotland to live, which is where his wife is from.

During a 17-year playing career, Edvaldsson played for clubs such as Valur, FC Metz and Hannover 96.

In a social media post Motherwell said: "We are saddened to learn of the news of the death of Johannes Edvaldsson at the age of 70.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic C are with Joahnnes' family at this very sad time.
