Ex-cat cafe in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter set to go under the hammer

A former cafe in Derby’s historic Cathedral Quarter, which doubled up as a cat rehoming centre, is to be sold at auction after closing almost a year ago.

The not-for-profit Curious Cats Rehoming Centre and Tea Room, in Wardwick, closed its doors for good in September last year due to “financial reasons”.

Before then, the Victorian-themed cafe, which in the two years it operated had rescued more than 100 cats, had previously been called Lady T’s.

Since Curious Cats closed, the property, which is in the heart of the city centre has stood empty.

But now it has been included in a sale organised by SDL Auctions Graham Penny, which is due to take place on September 5 at Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium.

The three-storey, Grade II-listed property, has been given a guide price of £125,000-plus.

The ground floor is made up of retail and storage space, including a toilet and large kitchen. The first floor is home to the former tea room. There are a further two rooms upstairs. Outside there is a rear garden/courtyard.

In the particulars, SDL Auctions said: “The property is in prime city centre location. It situated close to the Debenhams redevelopment scheme and comprises ground floor retail and upper floors with potential for residential conversion, subject to planning consent.”

“It is offered for sale with vacant possession and zero empty property rates (as it is a listed building).”
