Ex-Cardiff City, Celtic and Sunderland defender Adam Matthews closing in on Championship return

Charlton Athletic have confirmed they have opened talks with Wales international Adam Matthews over a possible free transfer.

The former Cardiff City prodigy has been without a club since his release from Sunderland earlier in the summer, and has been training with the Addicks for the last couple of weeks.

And the club's head of recruitment Steve Gallen admits the club, who are currently sitting in second place in the Championship following a blistering start to the season, have opened talks with the 27-year old over a possible move.

However, he admits there are other targets on their radar, including Tyrone Mears, who has also been linked with a move.

Gallen told the South London Press : “We are speaking to Adam Matthews’ agent about doing something. There is nothing concrete yet but I think we can get some common ground between us.

“If we do that [deal] then that will be our last signing.

“There are a few free transfers about and there is one other right-back [option], which is not Tyrone Mears.

“There is a will on both sides [with Matthews] to do it. It’s just finding that common ground.”

Matthews, who attracted widespread praise for man-marking Lionel Messi out of a Champions League tie for Celtic, has been considering his next move since Sunderland's defeat to Charlton in the League One play-off final at the end of last season.

Should he complete a move to South London, he will link up with fellow Welsh international Jonny Williams, who also recently swapped Wearside for South London.
