Man struck cabbie with broken mug when told not to make cuppa

A former employee of a taxi firm went back and got into a fight when he tried to make a cup of tea.

George Hull used to work for Abbey Taxis in Bath.

Bristol Crown Court heard he turned up drunk at 1.15am and when told to leave the kitchen he struck driver Gary Beck with a broken mug and kicked him in the chest.

Hull, 24, of Apsley Road in Newbridge, Bath, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm of Gary Beck on March 8, 2018.

The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC handed him a 15 months prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He told Hull: "You went far beyond what could be described as acting in reasonable self-defence.

"I'm sure it was affected by drink, immaturity, over-reacting and using physical force rather than words or retreating."

Hull was ordered to pay £500 compensation, £150 costs and a £140 victim surcharge.

He was also told to attend a Thinking Skills programme for up to 42 days.

Giles Nelson, prosecuting via video link due to the coronavirus pandemic, said Hull went to make a cup of tea and Mr Beck told him to leave.

In a tussle that ensued they fell to the floor, Hull's mug smashed leaving him with just the handle, and at some point Mr Beck was hit to the side of his head.

He sustained a cut ear which needed ten stitches and tenderness to his ribs.

While Mr Beck claimed he was stamped to the head, Hull denied doing so in his basis of plea.

George Threlfall, defending, said his client had worked at the taxi firm some six months.

He told the court: "He accepts he shouldn't have gone round into the kitchen.

"He accepts Mr Beck shouldn't have got hurt. His remorse is undoubtedly geniune.

"He has always denied stamping on his head."

Mr Threlfall said his client hoped to start a new job as lockdown eases.
