Ex-Broncos DB/LB Jamal Carter signs with Falcons’ practice squad

Former Denver Broncos defender Jamal Carter is signing with the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Carter (6-1, 215 pounds) signed with Denver as a college free agent out of Miami following the 2017 NFL draft. He went on to make the team and dressed for all 16 regular-season games as a rookie, playing mostly on special teams.

After missing all the 2018 season with a hamstring injury, Carter attempted to switch from safety to inside linebacker this summer to increase his chances of making the team. He failed to make the Broncos’ 53-man roster but coach Vic Fangio hinted during his media availability Saturday that the defender might return down the road.

“Jamal’s a guy that we all like here and a guy that we may want to get back here at some point, but when you change a guy’s position it’s particularly such a drastic change from safety to inside linebacker where he’s really never been,” Fangio said. “It’s a new world. He needed more time to develop there, but he’s a good football player who I’m confident has some more days left in the NFL.”

It’s unknown if the Broncos attempted to sign Carter to their own practice squad and its unclear if Atlanta plans to use the defender as a safety or as a linebacker. If Denver needs more depth at either position in the future, they could sign Carter off Atlanta’s practice squad to their active roster.

Carter, 25, totaled 11 tackles and broke up one pass in 2017.
