Former Broncos cornerback Tony Carter is set to join the Lions’ coaching staff as a defensive assistant, according to a report from ESPN (via Lions Wire). While playing for the Patriots in 2010, Carter played under Detroit coach Matt Patricia, who was New England’s defensive coordinator at the time.
Carter, 33, entered the NFL as a college free agent out of Florida State with Denver in 2009. He spent the first few years of his career mainly as a special teams player before emerging as a rotational cornerback in 2012.
During the 2012 season, Carter totaled 27 tackles, broke up 12 passes and intercepted two passes, returning one of them for a touchdown. He also returned two fumbles for touchdowns during his time with the Broncos.
After brief stints with the Colts and Saints in 2015 and 2016, Carter hung up his cleats. He served as Jacksonville University’s cornerbacks coach last fall before the school’s football program was discontinued.
During his eight-year career in the NFL, Carter totaled 49 tackles, broke up 20 passes, intercepted three passes and scored three touchdowns.
