Ex-Bronco Jamil Hopoate hit with charges

Off-contract NRL player Jamil Hopoate has been charged with assault, intimidation and drink driving offences on the NSW mid north coast.

The 26-year-old was arrested on Sunday evening at premises in Bay Street, Port Macquarie after allegations of an assault.

Hopoate was subsequently charged with three counts of common assault, two of stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical harm and one charge of mid-range drink driving.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on January 20.

The charges place a significant cloud over the ex-Brisbane forward's NRL future.

Hopoate's contract expired at the Broncos at the end of 2020 and he took to Instagram last month to confirm he would not be returning to the club.

He played 12 NRL matches in Brisbane's sub-par 2020 campaign, mostly off the bench.

A talented junior, Hopoate is second-eldest son of former Manly winger John Hopoate.

He has previously been sacked by Parramatta and Manly due to off-field issues.

The NRL declined to comment as Hopoate is not currently a registered player.
