Ex-British Airways pilot explains what you are really breathing in on a plane

A film screening in Bristol explores what we are really breathing in on planes.

The Everyman cinema in Whiteladies Road, Clifton, will show Everybody Flies at 7.30pm on February 27, followed by a Q&A.

The documentary, which is the work of former British Airways captain Tristan Loraine, has made the official selection of the Raindance Film Festival.

Everybody Flies raises the issue of ‘aerotoxic syndrome’, which Mr Loraine says can have long-term health implications.

Produced by British production company Fact Not Fiction Films, the documentary presents a number of whistleblower testimonials.

Mr Loraine says the air we breathe on flights is taken from an unfiltered, compressed section of a plane’s engines, in a process called ‘bleed air’.

A mix of toxic chemicals can contaminate this air supply due to the way aircraft engines have been designed, he says.

This has been the case for more than 60 years, meaning millions of travellers may have been affected, according to the film.

The documentary includes research from experts who analyse how the issue has impacted the health of flight crews exposed to the air for long periods.
