Ex-Bristol Rovers, Middlesbrough and Leicester City goalkeeper Adam Smith signs for League Two side despite Barnsley interest

Former Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Adam Smith has joined Forest Green Rovers despite reported interest from the Championship.

The 26-year-old had been linked with a move to Barnsley, but it is the League Two side who have tied up the deal.

Smith was released by the Gas at the end of the season having spent the majority of the campaign as back-up to loanee Jack Bonham at the  Memorial Stadium.

He played the majority of his first team football for Northampton Town before moving to Rovers in July 2017. In his first season at the Pirates under manager Darrell Clarke he and Slocombe were neck and neck as to who was first choice and Smith played 26 games for the club in 2017/18.

Speaking after joining Forest Green, Smith said: "I spoke to the manager when I was on holiday and he didn’t need to sell the club to me much, I knew what they were about.

“I think it is a good opportunity for me to move my game onto the next level.

“When you see how close they were to going up last season through the play-offs and only five points off the automatics, hopefully next season they can take it to the next level.

“I’d like to say I’m experienced in this league, I enjoyed my football when I played for Northampton in this league and hopefully we can kick on now.”

Forest Green were in need of new goalkeeper after Lewis Ward returned to his parent club Reading following a successful loan spell at the club.

Meanwhile, Barnsley were preparing for a situation where they could lose their current first-choice 'keeper Adam Davies to Stoke City, but they have since signed Bradley Collins from Chelsea on a four-year deal and Austrian stopper Samuel Radlinger.
