Ex-Bristol Rovers goalkeeper a free agent after Cardiff City release as Barton looks for cover

Joe Day, who spent half of last season on loan at Bristol Rovers, is available on a free transfer after being released by Cardiff City.

The 30-year-old moved to the Mem in January to mitigate for Anssi Jaakkola's injury absence, making 20 appearances across the reigns of Paul Tisdale and Joey Barton.

Day's performances were mixed in a Rovers shirt, his form often fluctuating with the fortunes of the team, but there were more than enough signs he is a competent keeper.

Barton plans to sign a number two goalkeeper this summer following the departures of Jordi van Stappershoef, Alexis Andre Jr and Liam Armstrong.

Jaakkola and 18-year-old Jed Ward are Rovers' two contracted keepers and, given the two significant injuries suffered by the Finland international over the past two seasons, acquiring further depth between the sticks is essential in the upcoming transfer window.

Day, who is based in South Wales after four years with Newport County and a two-year spell at the Cardiff City Stadium, could fit the bill for the Gas, who will be looking for a number two keeper who is ready to cover any injury absences, plus the Finn's stints on international duty.

In the past two seasons, Rovers opted not to trust van Stappershoef, signing Jamal Blackman and Day following shoulder and Achilles injuries to Jaakkola.

But Bristol Live understands while the Gas are actively looking for a new goalkeeper, Day is not currently on their radar.

Barton has completed four new signings this summer, fortifying his defensive and holding midfield options, with a keeper among the remaining items on his wishlist – but, as it stands, Day will not be returning to the Mem, at least not at this stage of the window. Should both parties fail to secure the deals they want, it may be revisited in the summer.

The former Peterborough United keeper has been coveted by League One clubs in recent windows, with the Gas beating AFC Wimbledon and Swindon Town to his signature in January. Like Rovers, he may be looking in a different direction.
