Ex-Bristol Rovers boss promises to strip naked if his team wins relegation showdown

After raising eyebrows with plans to go on a diet and turn off his heating, former Bristol Rovers manager Mark McGhee has taken things to a new level ahead of a pivotal relegation clash.

Dundee are bottom of the table and face second-bottom St Johnstone on Saturday, in desperate need of narrowing the five-point gap to boost their chances of avoiding the drop to the Scottish Championship.

Earlier in the week, McGhee said he had gone on a diet and turned off his heating, claiming it would maximise his focus for the basement showdown at Dens Park. He said: “I then ask myself why am I hungry and I am hungry because there is a big game on Saturday. I then ask myself why am I cold? I can say because of the game on Saturday."

McGhee, who managed the Gas in 2012 and was sacked with the club in the League Two relegation zone, took his comments to a new level at his pre-match press conference. He told reporters he will strip naked if Dundee claim victory on Saturday.

"Some people might understand what I was trying to do and other people think it's funny," he told The Herald. "The boys made me promise that if we beat St Johnstone then I've got to go naked for a week, which is not going to help anyone.

"You've just got to do something. You've got to do something to psychologically remind yourself and put yourself under a bit of pressure because there's a big game coming. I think the players understand the message that I'm trying to give."

McGhee won just 12 of his 45 games in charge of the Gas. He was sacked following a 4-1 defeat to York in December 2012, leaving Rovers in a relegation battle. His replacement, John Ward, led the club to a 14th-place finish.
