Ex-Bristol Rovers and Coventry City defender closing in on move to Pirates' League Two rivals

Popular former Bristol Rovers defender Tom Davies is set to complete a move to Tranmere Rovers, Bristol Live understands.

The 29-year-old is a free agent this summer after being released by the Gas, but he is on the verge of completing a move to Micky Mellon's side at Prenton Park.

The centre-back did not let Rovers down on the pitch, but his spell in BS7 was marred by knee injuries which forced him to spend almost all of 2020 on the sidelines.

But he got back in the grove with a loan move in January to Barrow, where he played 12 games and scored once in League Two.

He was one of 11 players released by the Gas at the end of the season, but his performances at Holker Street have earned him a move to a Tranmere side tipped for promotion after being beaten in the League Two play-off semi-finals by Morcambe last month.

The deal was first reported by Football League World and Bristol Live understands the report to be accurate. An announcement by the end of the week is possible.

Davies, who is based in the North West, made 22 appearances across a two-year spell with Rovers, scoring once after signing from Coventry City in the summer of 2019.

He was a key component of Graham Coughlan's defence, which underpinned their surge to fourth in League One in late 2019, only for Davies to suffer a knee injury and Rovers' season to collapse.

Davies made a brief comeback under Ben Garner in early 2020, but surgery was required on patellar tendinitis in March. He soon required a similar procedure on the other knee.

He battled away admirably in his rehabilitation in hope of wearing the blue and white quarters again, but he was loaned out in January until the end of his contract, leaving Gas boss Joey Barton with no chance to assess him in the flesh.
