Ex-boxer jailed for killing brother with one punch 'after sexual comments to girlfriend'

The mum of a man killed by his own brother in a one-punch attack says she has had her "very soul ripped out."

Dominic Robson, 26, punched Jordan Bell, 27, outside a Sunderland bar on July 10 last year after he made sexual comments about his girlfriend.

Robson admitted manslaughter earlier this year, claiming he had acted in self-defence.

He was jailed for five years and two months at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday.

Jordan's mum said in a statement read out to the court that she has had her "very soul ripped out."

She said: "Jordan had made his own life, had secured a job he loved and had set up home with his dog and cats. I have had my very soul ripped out of me and there's nothing to replace it."

Police say the case will serve as a reminder of the consequences of throwing a punch as CCTV footage showed the group drinking together moments before.

Detective Inspector Phil Bowles, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a truly tragic case that highlights the horrendous and irreversible consequences that throwing a punch can have.

“The impact of that single punch thrown by Robson caused Jordan to fall backwards and hit his head off the pavement, suffering injuries that he was simply unable to survive from.

“I hope this case acts as a serious reminder to everyone about what can happen when you throw a punch. Robson’s decision that night has not only taken away his brother’s future, but ruined several lives forever.

“Robson made a choice when turning to violence and sadly that decision has had heart-breaking consequences.”

A bouncer, who saw the incident, claimed the brothers were engaged in a heated argument and Robson was "being aggressive" and was annoyed at certain inappropriate sexual comments Mr Bell had made to his girlfriend.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that once outside the pub, Robson swung a punch at his brother, knocking him to the ground.

The attack was caught on CCTV and a member of the public told police he was walking along the street when he heard a thud behind him and turned to see a man lying on the floor with blood coming from his ears.

Robson walked away from the scene with his girlfriend. After his arrest, he told police his brother had made sexual jokes towards his girlfriend.

Mr Bell was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where it was found he had suffered "catastrophic" injuries when his head hit the concrete and he died two weeks later in hospital.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that Robson was slapped with a caution in 2019 after he threw a single punch at someone during a dispute.

As she sentenced him, Her Honour Judge Moreland said Mr Bell was vulnerable due to being drunk.

She said: "I have heard victim personal statements from his mother and sister, also your relatives and they have spoken of the ordeal they have suffered and the dreadful grief. There is no sentence the court can impose that will lesson that grief."
