Oscar Reddrop, who used to be one of Boris Johnson’s key advisers in No 10, joined GB News with a rather spicy prediction that Keir Starmer must be banging his fist on the desk in frustration thanks to the political chaos stirred up by Rachel Reeves’ latest bombshell on inflation.
With inflation hitting a steeper-than-expected 3.5% and bills continuing to soar, it’s not just households feeling the squeeze the political pressure cooker is hissing too. According to Oscar, the fallout has not only damaged Starmer and Reeves’ popularity but may have lit a fire under Angela Rayner’s ambitions for the top job, reported the Express.
Oscar didn’t mince his words. “The political intrigue is Angela Rayner declaring pretty much open warfare on the No 10-No 11 orthodoxy,” he told presenter Stephen Dixon. He reckons Rayner is deliberately positioning herself as the alternative voice especially to those on the Labour left who’ve grown weary of the current leadership. “She is now showing the Labour left that there is another way,” he added.
Rayner’s recent push to cap migrants’ benefits and restrict their NHS access hasn’t gone unnoticed either. It’s a bold move that could win over voters frustrated with the party’s current direction, and it’s drawn a sharp line between her and the rest of the Labour leadership.
“Do you think she’s pitching for the top job? Do you think there’s gonna be movement?” Dixon asked. Oscar didn’t hesitate: “100%.”
He went on to say Rayner has cleverly zeroed in on what he believes is Starmer’s biggest weak spot — Rachel Reeves. “Actually, very skilfully, she has identified that Rachel Reeves is a real, real weakness for this government now,” Oscar said.
And he would know a bit about the tensions that can bubble up behind closed doors. Reflecting on his own time in Downing Street, he said: “I remember when I worked at No 10 for Boris, the No 10-No 11 relationship when times are tough can get really fraught. Starmer will be banging his fist on the desk in frustration around the trouble that Rachel Reeves is causing the government!”
But while the idea of Rayner moving in on Starmer’s territory might be exciting Westminster insiders, GB News viewers weren’t exactly jumping for joy. In fact, some of the reactions online were scathing.
“Gosh and here I am thinking it can’t get any worse!” one user wrote on X. Another fumed: “Next up for the Top Job is the dimwit Rayner how low can the UK sink?” A third posted: “Oh hell no… he’s bad enough, but her!! She will destroy Britain she’s doing so much damage already.”
Not everyone dismissed the idea, though. One viewer mused: “Will the public think, ‘Yes please, anyone but Starmer?’”
This all kicked off just hours after Rachel Reeves tried to reassure the public, insisting that even with the grim inflation spike, people were still better off now than under the Tories. Whether anyone’s buying that message is another matter.
For now, the drama inside Labour continues to swirl, and with party figures jostling for position, it’s clear that all eyes and perhaps ambitions are looking squarely at Number 10.
