Ex-Bolton Wanderers and Oldham Athletic defender David Wheater linked with non-league move

Darlington are reprotedly understood to be considering a move for former Bolton Wanderers and Oldham Athletic defender David Wheater.

The 34-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by the Boundary Park club in March.

He had played 35 times for the Latics and scored four goals in the 2019/20 campaign, after arriving from Wanderers in the summer of 2019.

Wheater turned out more than 230 times for Wanderers and scored 16 goals after joining the club from Middlesbrough in 2011.

The central defender remains a free agent after leaving League Two Oldham last season.

The Northern Echo reports that League Two newboys Hartlepool United monitored the situation of Wheater, but that no talks took place between the player and manager Dave Challinor.

National League North side Darlington are also reported to have been considering a move for the former Wanderers and Latics defender, who remains a free agent.

Wheater spent part of the 2006/07 season on loan at Darlington when the club were in League One.

Wheater has racked up more than 400 appearances so far in his playing career and found the back of the net 35 times.
