Ex-Bolton Wanderers and Liverpool goalkeeper on Hungary's Euro 2020 group of death with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal

Former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Adam Bogdan is trying to look on the bright side of Hungary's group of death at Euro 2020.

The former Whites stopper is a member of his country's squad at this summer's tournament

The action gets under way in group F today as Hungary take on reigning champions Portugal this evening.

And the other two teams Hungary will face are world champions France and fellow European powerhouse Germany in the tournament's so-called 'group of death'.

Bogdan played 120 times for Wanderers before departing the club in 2015 and making the move to Liverpool and has since had spells at Wigan Athletic and Hibernian and is currently at Hungarian side Ferencvaros..

Bogdan will be back-up in the Hungarian squad to Peter Gulacsi and Denes Dibusz as they take on Portugal this evening in Budapest.

The former Bolton stopper is under no illusions of the challenge being in a group containing Portugal, France and Germany involves.

But he believes Hungary can use this chance to test themselves against some of the world's best and improve as a result.

“You can look at it in two ways. It’s amazing because you get to play against the best,” Bogdan told the Athletic.

“On the other hand, it means your chances are more limited — because you are playing against the best. So what we are doing here (at Hungary) is to take it as an opportunity to improve and get up to the level of these opponents, and that starts with Portugal.

“In the last couple of years, we have defended really well. I think that is going to be key and will provide the basis of our approach.

"We need to be very disciplined and we are confident we can put in a really good defensive display. And then, in attack, we will try to surprise these teams.

“In training. we have put a lot of emphasis on fitness and tactics. too. We know the quality of our opponents and individual qualities they all have.

"We know it is not going to be easy but we are feeling positive and confident with the talented players we have.”
