Ex-Blackpool boss on Bolton Wanderers League One claim and Wigan Athletic's James McClean

Wigan Athletic's Leam Richardson's team talk would have been made easier after Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt's claim that his team is the best in League One in terms of performances.

That's the view of former Blackpool boss Ian Holloway.

The Latics took the lead in the first half when Will Keane slotted home early on to put Leam Richardson's side ahead at the break.

Wanderers nearly equalised through skipper Antoni Sarcevic just after the break, but Wigan struck back with a fabulous strike from James McClean.

Callum Lang added a third before McClean scored Wigan's fourth to compound Bolton's misery in a 4-0 loss for Wanderers.

After last weekend's loss to Sheffield Wednesday, Evatt said he believed his side is behind where he expects them to be and that his team are the best in the division based on performances.

Evatt made similar suggestions about his side during last season's promotion campaign out of League Two, even when the potential of playing League One football did not appear to be in the offing.

And Holloway, Evatt's former boss at Blackpool, believes his old central defender perhaps should have made the assertion within the Wanderers dressing room and not outside it, and that it made opposite number Richardson's team talk all the more easier.

Speaking on the EFL highlights show on Quest, Holloway also praised the contributions of McClean after his two goals.

He said: “I don’t think their manager had much of a team talk to do because that would have definitely woke up the opposition.

“He did it last year and it worked for him. I think they were 16th or something like that and he said we’re the best team in the division and they got promoted.

“Today I would have personally done it in our own dressing room, not letting it out there.

“What a quality player for Wigan to have and they looked excellent today.”
