The Insolvency Service said it plans to ban Dominic Chappell and three other former directors of BHS from serving as a company director for up to 15 years following its investigation into the retailer's collapse.
Mr Chappell famously bought the department store chain for £1 from Sir Philip Green in March 2015.
A spokesperson for the Insolvency Service said on Tuesday: "We can confirm the Insolvency Service has written to Dominic Chappell and three other former directors of BHS and connected companies informing them that we intend to bring proceedings to have them disqualified from running or controlling companies for periods up to 15 years.
"We can also confirm that we have written to Sir Philip Green, also a former director of BHS, informing him that we do not currently intend bring disqualification proceedings against him. As this matter may now be tested in the Court it is not appropriate to comment further."
BHS went into administration in April 2016 and collapsed in June of that year, with the loss of 11,000 jobs across the UK, when the high street store was unable to find £60m in emergency funding needed to pay wages and rent.
Earlier this year, Mr Chappell was found guilty of failing to provide information about the state of a pension fund in the wake of BHS' failure. He claimed he did "everything and more" to help The Pensions Regulator but was convicted of three charges under the Pensions Act 2004 after a four-day trial in Brighton in January.
