Ex-BBC presenter Simon McCoy criticises its Prince Philip coverage amid complaints

Simon McCoy has raised questions about the scheduling of his former employers.

The broadcaster, who recently announced he was leaving the Beeb and heading to Andrew Neil's GB News, asked why both BBC One and BBC Two are airing the same tribute feature on Prince Philip.

The news broke just after midday today that the Duke of Edinburgh had died peacefully in Windsor Castle at the age of 99.

A statement from Buckingham Palace told that Her Majesty The Queen, who had been married to the Duke for 73 years, felt a "deep sorrow" at his loss.

The BBC opted to postpone all non-news programming as a mark of respect, ITV following suit with news updates throughout the afternoon as well as a number of documentaries.

BBC One and Two are both airing A Tribute To HRH Duke Of Edinburgh in the 9-10pm slot, Simon questioning why it needs to be on two channels.

He tweeted: "BBC1 and BBC2 showing the same thing. And presumably the News Channel too. Why?

"I know this is a huge event. But surely the public deserve a choice of programming?"

Simon is not the only one to criticise the BBC's scheduling - the corporation has set up an online complaints form specifically about "too much TV coverage of the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

This morning's statement from Buckingham Palace read: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course.#

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Prince Philip had retired in 2017 at the age of 96, with 22,219 solo engagements under his belt.

And even while he is entitled to a full state funeral, the Duke was very clear about wanting a simple ceremony in arrangements made before his death.
