Ex-Barrington High athlete, Elgin student star on MTV matchmaking show

April 29--A former Barrington High School wide receiver and an Illinois State University student from Elgin have been cast on the upcoming season of the MTV matchmaking series "Are You the One?," network reps announced Thursday.

Sam Handler, who played football for the University of California at Los Angeles, and Alyssa Ortiz, a broadcast journalism major, are two of 20 singles trying to find love on the fourth season of the show, scheduled to premiere 9 p.m. June 13.

"Dating in California is difficult because everyone just kind of wants to have fun. One-night stands are big, stuff like that, and really, you know, it's not me. It's not how I was raised," Handler, 22, says in his casting video.

The cast members meet with matchmakers and psychologists, who pair them up in secret. If all the singles find their pre-determined match, they get a share of $1 million.

In a new twist, the group gains money in the jackpot if some contestants pick out their correct match at first sight. The group loses money if castmates fail to make at least one accurate match during weekly ceremonies.

"Get me away from this tiny, tiny town of losers and help me find my perfect match," Ortiz, 22, says in her casting video.
