Ex-Barrhead Travel boss in tears as 'heart condition forced him to sell empire'

The founder of broke down in tears yesterday as he revealed that a heart condition led him to sell his empire.

was giving evidence at an ­employment tribunal after claiming unfair dismissal from Travel Leaders, who bought his for £36million in February last year.

Munro told the tribunal in Glasgow that a life-threatening problem led him to sell his business.

The 75-year-old tycoon said: “I was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm. I went to the accountants as I may not live very long.

“I gave my daughter Sharon all the shares. ­Gradually Sharon was doing more and more.

“In the last two or three years, I gave up the day-to-day running of the ­business and was more involved in the ambassadorial side of things.”

He added: “I love working in the travel business. I was blessed to be in such an exciting industry.

“I just want to work for somebody. It would be nice if ­Barrhead was part of it.

“I have quite a lot of talent and know a lot of people. It breaks my heart to leave Barrhead. I am here in part to try to get my job back and to get back into the travel business.

“I should be allowed to work. The last couple of years have been a ­miserable time with lack of sleep and everything else.”

The tribunal previously heard that Jonathan Knapp, of Travel Leaders made Munro redundant months after the sale of the firm.

And Travel Leader chief executive Ninan Chacko accused Munro of refusing to let the business go and meddling in day-to-day affairs.
