Ex-Barca star sends Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs message over Guardiola's Champions League hopes

Rivaldo has told Manchester City's Premier League rivals not to expect Pep Guardiola to sacrifice their domestic dominance for Champions League glory.

The Catalan has not won the biggest prize in European football since two lifting the trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.

He guided Bayern Munich to the semi-finals on three occasions and saw City crash out in the round of 16, quarter-finals and quarter-finals again in 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Last season, Tottenham Hotspur were the team to knock them out of the competition as Mauricio Pochettino guided his side to the final in Madrid.

In a tense match, Spurs lost out to Liverpool, City's main rivals for the Premier League title, finishing a point behind the champions.

The key dates in the Premier League 2019/20 season

Chelsea pipped Arsenal and Manchester United to reach third ahead of Spurs in the race for a top four place but Rivaldo does not believe Guardiola's lack of success in the Champions League will distract him.

"From what I know of him, I don't think he is too obsessed with it," the former Ballon d'Or winner told BetFair .

"Being a two-time Premier League champion with a record points total is a great achievement these days as the English top-flight is the strongest in Europe.

"He also won all domestic competitions last season and his team plays beautiful football.

The Brazilian still thinks that Guardiola's elusive third Champions League title will come for him during his time in England, eventually.

"I believe that, if he continues at City for two or three more years, he will end up having very good opportunities to win the Champions League.

"We all know that winning a Champions League is very important as it is the biggest club competition in the world.

"But just because Manchester City are the favourites to win next season's tournament doesn't mean it will be easy.

"Barcelona took so long to win a second Champions League and there are many clubs that never achieved that goal, including City, so being favourite doesn't mean you would win it easily.

"There are so many strong teams fighting for the trophy."
