Ex-Atletico Madrid midfielder 'irritated' by build-up to Liverpool tie

Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Gabi has admitted he was irritated by the pre-match outlook ahead of the first-leg between Liverpool and the La Liga side.

The Reds returned to the Wanda Metropolitano for the first time since their triumph in the Spanish capital during last season's Champions League final against Tottenham.

Atletico frustrated Jurgen Klopp's side, taking the lead through an early goal and shutting up shop, giving the Spaniards a narrow advantage ahead of the second-leg at Anfield.

During the match, Atletico proved their worth and Gabi believes a lot of disrespect was shown towards his former employers ahead of Tuesday evening's clash.

Many saw Liverpool as favourites to sweep aside Atletico, which Gabi has since admitted ruffled his feathers before the match.

"Yes, and it bothers me. It seemed that Liverpool were going to play against Puerta Bonita, with all due respect," he told SER's El Larguero when asked if Atletico were overlooked for the tie.

Atletico lock horns with Liverpool in the reverse fixture at Anfield in three week's time, where the Reds need to secure a victory to keep the defence of their European crown alive.
