Ex-Arsenal star Mesut Ozil 'not happy' at Fenerbahce as transfer links emerge
Mesut Ozil is reportedly ‘not happy’ at Fenerbahce and wants to leave the Turkish club just eight months after his arrival from Arsenal.
The former Gunners playmaker has fallen from favour at the Istanbul giants and is said to now be open to a move away, despite having three years remaining on his deal.
His exclusion from recent team line-ups at the club coincide with fresh speculation that Ozil’s situation is being monitored by clubs in Qatar and in MLS.
The former Germany international made the switch to the Turkish club last January as a free agent, after the North London club agreed to terminate the final six months of his contract to save on his £350k-per-week wages.
That was a move that saved Arsenal an estimated £7million after Ozil had been ostracised by boss Mikel Arteta, as he was excluded from both the club’s Premier League and European panels - not making an appearance in the opening half of the campaign.
Ozil proclaimed upon his arrival in Turkey: "I was always Fenerbahce fan, this is a dream come true for me."
Injury has disrupted his time in Istanbul and limited him to just 10 league appearances last season, but there are indications that he does not have the full trust of club boss Vitor Pereira.
It is highlighted by Diario AS that Pereira is increasingly minded to instead play 20-year-old Muhammet Gumuskaya, who replaced Ozil in both Europa League qualification games for the club.
The former Real Madrid and Arsenal player was then excluded from the recent league game against Altay, which further fuelled reports of a rift between player and coach.
Those rumours accelerated after Ozil recently met with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamed Al Sani, which has led to suggestions he could be considering a career move to the nation.
The player’s agent Erkut Sogut has moved to pour cold water on such reports and claimed that his client is happy at Fenerbahce.
Sogut has said: "Mesut Ozil grew up with the love of Fenerbahce and now he feels the pride of wearing that shirt.
"He is very happy, he always gives his best for the success of Fenerbahce.
"There are some footballers who come to Turkey because they cannot find another club. Mesut came because he always planned for this and wanted it. It was not for money."
When asked about the player’s trip to Qatar, his agent added: "Mesut will play for Fenerbahce for three more years.
"Let no one doubt it. He went to Qatar for his own commercial and sponsorship negotiations.
"That is natural. If a player is happy when he does not play in the XI, so there is a problem.
"It is normal, but Mesut is willing to do anything on the pitch to win the championship with Fenerbahce."
