Ex-Arsenal star Mesut Ozil closer to potential England return after Fenerbahce contract decision

Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil could potentially be set to move a step towards a return to English football with reports suggesting that he is set to have his contract with Fenerbahce terminated. The German has endured an uneasy relationship with the Turkish giants since leaving the Emirates Stadium in 2021.

He enjoyed a slow start to life in the Super Lig having failed to score in any of his opening 11 games in all competitions for the club but had responded with a very promising 2021/22 season. The now 33-year-old had netted nine goals and notched two assists so far this campaign - and even captained the Istanbul giants on a number of occasions - but is now not in contention to play.

The German playmaker was suspended by Fenerbahce following a disagreement with interim boss Ismail Kartal, football.london understands. A statement from the club read: “Our Football A Team players Mesut Özil and Ozan Tufan were excluded from the squad as per the decision taken. It is announced to the public."

He was then not included in the side in a 4-0 victory over Kayserispor and now looks set to depart. According to AS, the process to terminate his contract - a deal that is set to run until 2024 - has already begun with Fenerbahce president Ali Koc rejecting the prospect of him making another appearance.

He said: "We do not have that plan at the moment. This decision is not child's play. The most important thing is Fenerbahce.”

Whilst it remains to be seen where the former Arsenal man will eventually end up, it appears that a return to English football could be an option. As per reports, Championship side Hull City are interested in making a move for the World Cup winner, with David Beckham’s Inter Miami also thought to be contenders should Ozil leave Fenerbahce.

The German of course left Arsenal just over a year ago with a public falling-out with current boss Mikel Arteta, although the Spaniard was complimentary of the midfielder as his Arsenal chapter came to a close.

He said: "Mesut's achievements at Arsenal are undisputed. It was a privilege to play alongside him and, more recently, coach him. His creativity and vision led to many goals during his time in the Arsenal shirt.

"Mesut was at the heart of many great moments for this club over the years, including those three FA Cup final wins. These successes will always be part of our history. We thank Mesut and wish him all the best with Fenerbahce."
