Ex-Arsenal midfielder makes big Christian Eriksen transfer claim ahead of January window

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour believes Tottenham star Christian Eriksen is likely to reject a move away from the club in January.

Spurs could look to sell the midfielder in the winter window to ensure they receive a fee for the playmaker rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

The Danish international was expected to leave the north London club last summer after admitting he wanted to ‘try something new‘ - and has not put pen to paper on a new deal since, with the expectation that he will now leave the club.

But Parlour believes Eriksen is unlikely to agree to a January move as he could earn himself an extra £20m if he sees out the remaining six months of his deal.

“I think the player will have something to say about [leaving in January], because he might say, ‘I’m not going anywhere’,” the Gunners legend told talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast show.

“From January 1 you can do your contract and pre-sign with whoever you are going to, and his wages will be so much more if he goes on a free transfer.

“So he’ll be saying: ‘No, I’m not going anywhere and I don’t have to go anywhere’.

“You might get £20million for him in January, but that £20m will go in his pocket if he stays another six months.”

Before Parlour added: “If there are players who want to play for Tottenham more than Eriksen, then yes [I would ignore him].

“I know he’s a quality player, but sometimes you’ve got to say, ‘he’s going to do a better job for me, he’s going to try harder than Eriksen’.

“As much as he’s got good quality, [a different player] will put a shift in and work hard for the team and everybody around him.

“Sometimes you’ve got to be cruel.”
