Ex-Airdrie and Ayr United star joins coaching team at Gartcairn

Former Airdrie, Ayr United and Dumbarton defender Paddy Boyle has been appointed as player/assistant manager at West of Scotland League First Division club Gartcairn.

The 35-year-old joins the Airdrie club from Dumbarton, having left after they were relegated to League Two, turning down a new contract and a coaching role at the Sons.

New boss Mick Dunlop has signed Boyle as a left-back, but also as his right-hand man in the dug-out.

His experience is likely to prove invaluable in both roles.

Glasgow-born Boyle started his career as a youth at Everton in 2005, but never made a first-team appearance and was instead farmed out on loan to Norwich City and Crewe Alexandra, before his first spell at Dumbarton in 2009.

A two-year spell at Partick Thistle followed for the defender, but he was loaned out to Clyde, before spending two further years at Dunfermline Athletic from 2011-13, during which time he was loaned out to Gateshead.

Further spells at Airdrie, Ayr United, Peterhead and Kelty Hearts followed, before he spent last season at Dumbarton.

While at Dumbarton, Boyle won the Scottish Third Division in 2008-09, and League Two with Peterhead in 2018-19.
