Broncos cornerback Bryce Callahan (foot) has missed the first three games of the season, leaving Isaac Yiadom as a fill-in starter across from Chris Harris. Yiadom failed to take advantage of his increased snaps and he was benched 14 plays into Sunday’s game against the Packers.
Yiadom was replaced by journeyman cornerback De’Vante Bausby, who played in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football before signing with Denver in April. Bausby led the AFF in interceptions and pass breakups before the league went under.
Bausby played 41 snaps in Green Bay, totaling three tackles. He drew praise from Harris after the game and was compared to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who has earned two Pro Bowl nods in his career.
“I love ‘Baus,’ man,” Harris said Sunday, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. “He comes to play with great energy, has great ball skills. He reminds me of DRC. I love his game.”
Bausby played under Broncos coach Vic Fangio with the Bears from 2015-2016 before going on to spend time with the Chiefs and Eagles. Fangio indicated Monday that Bausby didn’t have a perfect game against the Packers but is still favored over Yiadom.
“He had some really nice plays, broke up a couple passes,” Fangio said. “He has some plays that he needs to fix. He had some plays that could potentially have ben big plays for them, but they didn’t find them, so he has to correct them now that they’re on tape.
“He could have tackled better in a couple instances, but overall he took advantage of his opportunity and that’s why we left him out there.”
If Callahan is held out again this week, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Bausby start over Yiadom against the Jaguars on Sunday.
