Ex-49er Justin Smith lists Bay Area home for sale at $2.888 million

July 21--Former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith, who in May announced his retirement from the NFL after 14 seasons, has put his home in San Jose on the market for $2.888 million.

Set against the hillside, the sprawling 3.6-acre property sits on a private street and is accessed by a long driveway. Lawns, waterfalls, a tennis/basketball court, a covered cabana and a swimming pool with a spa make up the park-like grounds.

The Mediterranean-style home, built in 1999, features a double-height entry with a curved staircase, formal living and dining rooms and a center-island kitchen in 4,230 square feet. Four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms include a master suite with a fireplace, a soaking tub and a large walk-in closet.

Smith paid $2.875 million for the house in 2008, about two months removed from signing a six-year, $45-million free agent contract with the 49ers.

Rick Alva of Soto Real Estate Investments has the listing.

Smith, five times a Pro Bowl player, was drafted fourth overall by the Bengals in 2001 and split his career evenly between Cincinnati and San Francisco. He retired with 87 sacks and 613 tackles in 221 career games.

While Smith is done playing football professionally, he may not be done with the sport entirely. The 35-year-old is reportedly considering joining the coaching staff at Missouri, where he twice earned first-team All-America honors, as an assistant in the weight room.
