Ewan McGregor stars as iconic fashion designer Halston as Netflix gives first glimpse at trailer

Netflix fans have been offered a glimpse at Ewan McGregor's latest series based on the life of designer Halston.

Starring the Scots actor and Rory Culkin, the miniseries follows the hedonistic life of the gay fashion designer, who rose to international fame in the 1970s.

The real-life Roy Halston Frowick was frequently photographed at New York City's Studio 54 with his close friends Liza Minnelli, Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol, with the famous nightclub featuring heavily in the show.

The trailer features glimpses of drug-taking, boozy parties and sex scenes as the designer appears to have somewhat of a breakdown as he's told he is "out of control".

Set to the backdrop of Depeche Mode's hit Enjoy the Silence it begins with Halston saying: "I have a vision, I'm gonna change the face of American fashion.

"I've been an outsider my whole life, till one day I just stopped giving a flying f**k," he adds, as Ewan's character is seen arriving at the legendary Studio 54.

Krysta Rodriguez stars as Liza Minnelli in the original series, while Rory Culkin portrays Joel Schumacher, and Gianfranco Rodriguez plays Victor Hugo.

The plot follows Halston as he leverages his single, invented name into a worldwide fashion empire that's synonymous with luxury, sex, status and fame, literally defining the era.

The trailer ends with Halston asking: "Do you ever feel like everything you have could disappear in an instant?"

It comes as the Trainspotting actor admitted he was “relieved” to work with an intimacy coordinator while filming the new series – as he has always been embarrassed when doing sex scenes.

McGregor worked on set with an intimacy coach for the first time in his career after he was fed up with directors telling him to “just do whatever”, which he labelled “embarrassing” and “not fair on either actor”.

The Scot, 50, said: “This [Halston] was the first thing I’ve ever done where we had an intimacy coordinator.

“It was such a relief, and it’s about time.”

The Scots actor recently spoke out about taking on the role of a gay man amid some backlash because he is straight in real life.

"I hear the discussion and I respect both sides of it, I really do," he said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

He added: "I don’t know what it’s like to lose out on parts when you might feel it’s to do with your sexuality.

"If it had been a story about Halston’s sexuality more, then maybe it’s right that gay actors should play that role.

"But in this case - and I don’t want to sound like I’m worming out of this, because it’s something I did think a lot about - I suppose ultimately I felt like it was just one part of who he was.

"There are people I met who do not have nice things to say about him. And there are people who love him and are unbelievably loyal to this day. I was excited to play that. To go to the extremes of his temper.

"But behind it all - this drive, this creative drive. And this desire to be grand. Everything had to be the best," the Scottish actor added.

Halston will be available to stream on Netflix from Friday 14 May, 2021.
