Evil thug who strangled ex screamed 'I'm glad our daughter died' during assault

A sick thug screamed at his ex-girlfriend 'I'm glad our daughter died' during a brutal attack in her home.

Gary Eden woke up his terrified victim just after midnight on December 13 last year, kicking her front door and shouting “open this f***ing door”, Bolton Crown Court was told.

The woman had given birth to Eden's child less than two weeks earlier, but the newborn had tragically died just a short time after, prosecution barrister Cheryl Mottram said.

As she answered the door to him, Eden barged past the woman and dragged her to the floor.

The 27-year-old then picked her up from the floor and threw her against the wall, repeatedly slamming her head against it, Manchester Evening News reports.

Eden then dragged the woman towards the stairs, strangled her and stamped on her head.

He then pulled her back towards the living room where he continued to stamp on her head.

Eden screamed: “I’m going to f***ing kill you,” and “I’m glad our daughter died so I don’t have to be tied to you.”

The court heard that he then spat at his victim, before she managed to flee through a window.

Eden, of Langthorne Walk, Bolton, was arrested a short time later and admitted to the assault during his interview, telling police that he had been drinking all day.

He pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage at the first opportunity.

Defending, Nicholas Ross made reference to the unlawful killing of Eden’s daughter Darcey Stevens by her mum Tiffany Stevens in 2019.

Mr Ross described Eden as a “young man who has clearly been horrendously impacted by grief and loss'' and told the court that he had “never got over” the incident.

He added that despite losing two daughters in the space of two years, it did not “excuse” the “grave assault”.

Mr Ross also mentioned a “remarkably charitable and compassionate letter” that Eden’s victim wrote to the court and said that Eden has been left “embarrassed, ashamed and remorseful” by his actions.

The Honorary Recorder of Bolton Judge Martin Walsh jailed Eden for 20 months.

He said: “This was a brutal attack upon your former partner who was in a very vulnerable state at the time.”
