Evil Scots killer who hid victim's mutilated body in back garden dies in hospital

A convicted double killer who kept his victim's mutilated body for up to 17 months in his back garden has died after contracting pneumonia.

Evil Robert Chalmers was jailed for a minimum of 23 years following Samantha Wright's tragic death in 2009.

The 69-year-old was rushed from Edinburgh prison last week and passed away in hospital on Monday.

It is understood Chalmers had been suffering from ill-health for some time before he was found last week suffering from chest pain and shortness of breath.

Police found 24-year-old Samantha's body in Chalmers' home in Magdalene Drive, Edinburgh in October 2009.

Samantha, who was from Stevenage but had been living in Edinburgh, was reported missing by her family in January 2009, on what would have been her 25th birthday.

She had failed to be in touch with her family for months.

Police believe she died sometime around June 2008 and callous Chalmers then partially dismembered her body before hiding it in a wheelie bin.

At his trial in 2011 it was revealed Chalmers used air fresheners and fly spray to hide the smell of her decomposing body.

It was the second time Chalmers had been found guilty of murder.

He had already served nine years of a life sentence imposed for a murder in Renfrewshire in December 1973.

Chalmers had stabbed drinking friend William White, 47, after a row in William's home in Beech Road, Johnstone.

After his release, Chalmers, a handyman and labourer, moved to Edinburgh.

A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service said: "We do not comment on individual prisoners."

It is understood efforts are underway to trace next of kin.
