Evil paedophiles who thought they had gotten away with it

These are the evil paedophiles who thought they had gotten away with their sickening crimes.

Among them is Edward Stanton, a former house master at the infamous St Vincent's care home in Formby.

The ECHO has previously reported how dozens of children's lives were destroyed by paedophiles who worked at St Vincent's where Stanton abused and raped boys during the 1980s.

He was jailed in 1996 for 13 years but got hauled back into court after another brave victim came forward, telling of how he would sleep outside so he could escape the hellish care home and Stanton's abuse.

A serial child rapist who forced girls to pose for semi naked pictures is also among the evil paedophiles who thought they had gotten away with their sickening crimes.

During his abuse Stephen Rafferty punched one of his victims and called her 'Satan's child' before swearing her to silence.

Read the details of these cases and others below.

John Phillips

A predatory rapist who targeted young children was also brought back before a court when another of his brave victims came forward.

John Phillips, now 50, was previously locked up in 2018 for 22 years after he raped and sexually assaulted eight young victims.

He was sent back to jail in January after a court heard he had repeatedly assaulted and raped another man when he was between the ages of three and 14.

Phillips, formerly of Runcorn, Widnes and Winsford, was re-investigated and charged with nine counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, six counts of indecent assault, and two of indecency with a child.

He showered his victims with gifts and money but would force them to keep his monstrous abuse a secret with threats of violence.

His sentence was increased by seven years to a total of 29 years - of which Phillips must serve at least two thirds before he can be considered for release by a parole board.

Due to the severity of his crimes even if he serves the full 29 years in prison he will be subject to an extra four years on licence upon his release.

Edward Stanton

An 'out of control' predator who raped children at the care home where he worked was sent back to jail.

Edward Stanton was a lab technician at the infamous St Vincent's where he abused boys in his care during the 1980s.

The former house master was jailed for 13 years in 1996 for sexual offences committed against seven boys, aged between 10 and 13.

He was sent back to jail after he was found guilty of two more sex attacks on another boy.

A court heard the boy would sleep outside to escape abuse in the hellish care home and his tormentor.

One attack took place when Stanton pretended to search the boy for cigarettes but put his hand down his trousers and touched his genitals.

Stanton, formerly of Kirkdale, but now of Earle Road, Wavertree, was jailed for three and a half years and told to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life

Robert Murray

A 'disgraceful and cowardly' children's home worker forced his two victims to relive his sickening abuse in court.

Robert Murray was found guilty of 12 counts of indecent assault while employed at the Liverpool children's home during the 1970s.

Murray, of Harrismith Road in Fazakerley, was jailed for 11 years in February this year after abusing both boys multiple times when he was supposed to be caring for them.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “Murray is a disgraceful and cowardly individual who seriously breached the trust of the two victims, and it’s pleasing to see him jailed for a significant amount of time.

“He continued to deny his crimes right throughout the investigation, putting the victims through the stress of a trial, but was found guilty by unanimous verdict on all charges against him.

“I want to commend the victims for the courage they have shown, not only in coming forward to report Murray, but throughout the investigation and court process too.

"Murray’s actions have no doubt significantly affected their lives, but I hope today brings a sense of closure on the traumatic experiences they have both been through, and allows them to continue moving forward knowing Murray won’t be released for a significant amount of time."

Stephen Rafferty

A serial child rapist forced girls to pose for semi naked pictures during his catalogue of abuse against them.

Sick Stephen Rafferty committed abhorrent acts against three children who were all under 14.

When one girl bit the vile paedophile he punched her and called her "Satan's child", swearing her to silence.

His monstrous abuse left his three victims psychologically scarred, and one admitted she had twice tried to take her own life and suffered PTSD.

Speaking about the rape one victim said: "Sometimes I asked him to stop at first but he wouldn't and there was no use."

The now-27-year-old admitted six counts sexual assault against a child and was convicted following a trial on January 11 of two counts of assault by penetration of a child, nine counts of rape of a child and two counts of taking indecent photographs of a child.

A judge branded Rafferty a "dangerous" offender and jailed him for 20 years, with an extended five years on licence.

Maurice Button

A pool attendant and handyman at a hotel groomed and raped a Liverpool schoolgirl.

Maurice Button told the schoolgirl he was teaching her how to be popular with boys when he abused her in a third floor toilet at the Torquay hotel where she was on holiday.

The girl remained silent afterwards for almost 40 years until she was overcome by the memories and went to the police.

A court heard he had also abused another girl while he worked at the hotel.

The 69-year-old fled court half way through his trial and was found guilty in his absence.

He then handed himself in four days later and was subsequently jailed for 13 years and six weeks.

Button, of Dandelion Place, Newton Abbot, denied but was found guilty of one count of indecency with a child and four counts of indecent assault and two of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.

In a moving statement the woman said: “I will go home today knowing that I have fought my demon and won, with the support of my family, my friends, and the police.”

Stephen Lewis

Liverpool Crown Court (liverpoolecho)

A vile paedophile's abuse of two girls went unreported for decades before he was brought to justice.

One victim said she had been left 'living a nightmare' after Stephen Lewis forced her to perform sex acts on him.

The 59-year-old warned the girl "don't tell anyone" before abusing her friend too.

The two children had written a letter to Jackie magazine which was discovered by one of their parents who accused them of lying.

Lewis, of Woodchurch Road, Prenton, admitted six counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecency with a child.

He was jailed for four years and the judge said the sentence he could impose was "seriously hampered" by the sentencing powers which were "very different to the sentences that can be imposed today".

Anyone with information or wants to report a sexual offence allegation is asked to call 101 where you will be spoken to by specially trained officers or you can pass information to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
