Everything you need to know about the phased return to the office starting today

The phased return to the office after 18 months of remote working begins today.

It marks the final milestone in the easing of restrictions before all Covid rules except mask wearing are scrapped on October 22nd.

Those returning to the workplace today will still follow measures such as physical distancing and mask wearing.

The Government confirmed last week that employers will not be allowed to ask staff about their vaccination status.

A Government statement released on Friday said: “As vaccination is not mandatory in Ireland, and there are no plans to make it so, employers cannot currently require staff to reveal their vaccination status.”

“The Government is confident that the guidance set out here, in addition to the exceptionally high vaccination rate of our adult population, will keep workers safe as they return to the office.”

Tainiste Leo Varadkar has also encouraged employers to be "flexible" with their staff as they get back to the workplace.

He said: “Although the public health advice no longer recommends working from home, I hope employers are speaking to their staff to figure out what works best for them and the business.

“We really want to see remote working become a permanent fixture of Irish working life. The pandemic has shown us that it can be done and I hope we can learn from what worked and incorporate it post-Covid.”

Restrictions on indoor activities are also being eased today.

Bowling alleys, snooker halls and other indoor amusement activities can all resume.

Activities such as dance classes and indoor sports classes can take place inside with up to 100 participants, but those involved must be either vaccinated or have recently recovered from Covid-19.

If unvaccinated people are participating, the activities can occur in pods of six people.

Today also sees restrictions on the number of attendees at outdoor gatherings scrapped completely.

However, restrictions on spectators at outdoor sports matches and concerts will remain in place until October 22nd.
