How long will this heatwave last – and how hot will it get?

  • The UK has entered its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 35C in isolated areas by Friday and Saturday.
  • South East England officially met heatwave criteria on Monday, recording a high of 34C in Teddington, south-west London.
  • Amber heat health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency for the Midlands and southern England, with yellow alerts for Yorkshire and northern England, from Wednesday to Sunday, warning of significant impacts on health and social care.
  • The Met Office predicts increasing humidity and a growing risk of showers or isolated thunderstorms by the weekend, with tropical nights possible in England.
  • Temperatures are likely to trend down slightly into early next week, however many areas will stay dry, fine and still warm.
