Everything you need to know about Europe's biggest balloon festival taking place 30 miles from Bristol

Europe's biggest balloon festival is set to take place this weekend when more than 150 hot air balloons from around the world are set to appear.

The  Longleat ‘Sky Safari’  will boast shaped balloons, tethered daytime displays, night glows to music and early morning mass ascents planned over three days from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15.

There will be as many as 30 other specially shaped balloons making an appearance over the weekend; either flying or taking part in tethered displays with everything from a flying recreation of the Brandenburg Gate, a giant emoji and a full-sized version of the famous animated balloon from Disney’s ‘Up’.

What is the weather forecast?

As we know in Bristol, bad weather can cause a lot of trouble at balloon festivals.

But there's good news for organisers as experts are predicting a heatwave will sweep across the country this weekend - just in time for the event.

The sun is due to shine down on revellers throughout all of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

And it is hoped the conditions will be suitable for the balloons to launch.

Daily schedule

  • 7:00am – 8:00am:  Morning mass balloon launch
  • 10am – 11:30am : Morning tethered balloon display
  • 11:30am - 12:30pm:  Model ballooning display
  • 2:30pm – 4pm:  Afternoon balloon tethering display
  • 5pm – 6:30pm:  Evening mass balloon launch
  • 7:45pm (*Friday and Saturday only):  Night Glow

Ticket information

Sky Safari is included as part of a regular Day Ticket to Longleat, which costs £29.70 online for an adult and £34.95 on the gate

Travel information

Longleat is just off the A36 between Bath and Salisbury (A362 Warminster – Frome road).

It's likely this road will be very busy just before headliner events such as the evening mass launch.

Frome Station is the closest station to Longleat and has a good service from Bath and London.

Warminster station, is about 5 miles from Longleat and is on the Cardiff to Portsmouth line.
