Everything we know so far after man plunged to death from upper floor of library

A man plunged to his death from the upper floor of Liverpool Central Library this morning.

Emergency services , including a large police presence, were called to the scene, just after 9am.

Sadly, a man was pronounced dead at the scene, on, William Brown Street.

Large emergency response

Merseyside Police were called to the Central Library after reports a man had fallen from the upper floor of the building.

A number of police vehicles were deployed to the scene, as well as paramedics.

Forensic officers were also present and a large cordon was put in place around the entrance to the building, as investigations continued.

Pictures taken at the scene show police officers guarding the entrance to the library, which was immediately closed to the public.

Following the incident visitors inside the library were evacuated and it has remained closed since the morning tragedy.

Screams of terror heard

Horrified witnesses who were in the library at the time of the incident told the ECHO of their horror at watching the man fall to his death from an upper floor.

Amarra Mossman was on the second floor of the busy landmark when she said she heard a "massive smash".

The shaken up 18-year-old student said: "I was near the glass area - so the bit where you look out.

"I just saw something fly past - like an object go past me. I didn’t realise it was a person.

"I thought it was a bag that went over at first.

“Then I head a massive smash - I really don’t know how to describe it.

“It really wasn’t something I would like to see again - if I’m honest."

Amarra, who was studying for her A level exams in the library, said there were around 40 people who were then evacuated from the building.

And it was only on her exit that she realised the seriousness of what had actually happened.

She added: “Once the alarm went off everyone was evacuated to the outside entrance not the front entrance and we were escorted to the museum after that as well.

"When I came down the stairs to leave the library - I saw him - it was horrific.

“People were in shock - saying “what was that? What was that?”

“There was one girl in hysterics crying, screaming and tearing up - there was a lot of that."

Man's identity unknown

Merseyside Police issued an update to confirm the death of the man is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for the force said: "A file is in the process of being prepared for the coroner.

"Officers from the force believe the man is in his 40s and from the Toxteth area.

"However, enquiries are ongoing to confirm his identity and inform his next of kin."

Library to re-open on Friday

Following the incident a post on the Central Library website stated the building will remain closed until further notice.

The post read: "Liverpool Central Library will be closed for the rest of today following an incident.

"All events that were due to take place have been cancelled.

"We will update you when we are able to reopen.

A notice on the website now reads: "The library will re-open at 9am on Friday."
