Everything we know so far about assault on St Helen's Road in Swansea

Armed police were called to an assault in Swansea on Tuesday evening near the city centre.

One man is in hospital following the incident, while police have been in the area tonight.

Here's what we know about the assault so far.

Where did the incident happen?

Witnesses at the scene said emergency services closed off Page Lane, Nicholl St and St Helen's Avenue in Swansea.

Police first arrived at approximately 8pm.

Armed police were seen outside the Wig & Pen in Brynmill, with nearby roads being cordoned off.

The affected area is a bustling part of the city with a number of popular restaurants and takeaways just a stone’s throw from the scene.

Why were emergency services called?

The Welsh Ambulance Service say they were called at 7.54pm to reports of an assault.

A spokesman said: "We received a call at 7.54pm this evening alerting us to an assault in Swansea.

"We sent one rapid response vehicle and an emergency ambulance to the scene.

"One male patient has been conveyed to Morriston Hospital."

There has been no update so far on the extent of the injuries.

What happened at the scene?

Witnesses at the scene said there were several police cars as well as armed police and a police helicopter in the area.

One man who lives on Nicholl Street said: "They locked down the whole road. They were looking for someone. Or more than one person. They were searching for them in this area."

Another resident added: "Apparently someone was hurt. And they are looking for whoever was involved.  It was crazy the police were everywhere."

After around 9pm, there was a minimal police presence in the area.

South Wales Police has been approached for a comment on the incident.
