Everything we know about Season 2 of Netflix's dark fantasy, 'The Witcher'

After months of trailers, interviews, and other teases, Netflix’s The Witcher has finally arrived. The Netflix series is based on the same source material as the hugely popular games: a series of short stories and novels written by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski.

Sapkowski’s fiction takes place in a world known as the Continent, where humans live alongside magical creatures like gnomes and fairies, as well as nonhuman species including elves and vampires. There’s also monsters that must be kept in line by bounty hunters known as Witchers. The titular Witcher in this series is Geralt of Rivia, played by Henry Cavill. Throughout the first season, Geralt not only battles monsters and becomes involved with both a princess, Ciri (Freya Allan), and a sorceress named Yennefer (Anya Chalotra).

The Witcher Season 2 is coming soon. So, if you’ve made it through Season 1, here’s what you can look forward to next.

Has The Witcher been renewed for Season 2?

You’re in luck on this one. Netflix did something atypical by giving The Witcher an early Season 2 renewal (as reported by Variety) back in mid-November.

When will The Witcher Season 2 be released?

Variety’s report on the early renewal also contained some key information about when production begins, as well as the release date.

The Witcher Season 2 will go into production in early 2020 in London. From there, we should expect the next season to arrive in 2021. It’s still unclear if Season 2 will shoot for a December 2021 release to mirror the Season 1 release, or if new episodes will debut earlier in the year.

How many episodes will The Witcher Season 2 have?

Netflix rarely colors outside the lines when it comes to an episode order for an original series. As such, we should bank on The Witcher Season 2 matching Season 1’s eight-episode count, with each installment clocking in at about one hour long.

Is there a trailer for The Witcher Season 2?

There isn’t a trailer for Season 2 yet. Given the production schedule, it’s possible we could get some new photos and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks in mid- to late 2020, and perhaps even a teaser in late 2020 or early 2021.

Netflix has a habit of premiering trailer for things whenever it damn well pleases. If the streaming giant is interested in building hype, they could release the trailer at least a few months in advance — a tactic they adopted for the Season 1 trailer back in July.

In lieu of a Season 2 trailer, now’s a great time to watch Season 1 to make sure you’re completely mentally and emotionally prepared for what’s next, don’t you think?

What is the plot of The Witcher Season 2?

There is no official word on the plot of The Witcher Season 2 just yet. It’s highly likely the series will continue to adapt Sapkowski’s novels, while also continuing the action set up in the final episodes. Season 1 adapted two Witcher short story collections, The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny.

If things continue in this vein, we should expect the show to adapt Blood of Elves, the first Witcher novel, and most likely the second book Time of Contempt. What will be pivotal is the development of the pseudo-family structure created between Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as they travel throughout the Continent and find themselves entangled with magical creatures, monsters, and the machinations of men.

Which cast members from The Witcher will return in Season 2?

Right now, the safest bets on returning cast members are Henry Cavill (Geralt of Rivia), Freya Allan (Ciri), and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer). Until we have a better idea of the plot of Season 2, it will be tough to confirm who else is on board.

How can I watch The Witcher Season 2?

The same way you watched The Witcher Season 1: on Netflix. If you don’t have access to Netflix yet, a) What are you doing with your life? and b) You should get on that ASAP because The Witcher Season 2 is coming soon.

How many baths does Geralt take in The Witcher Season 2?

There is no word yet on the bath count. However, if it has less than 10, we must take to the streets and revolt.

The Witcher Season 1 is now available to stream on Netflix.
