Everything we know about Netflix's Wednesday - the Addams Family spin-off

Fans of the Addams Family are gearing up for the release of Tim Burton’s spin-off series Wednesday, which is heading to Netflix this month.

The spooky series promises to be "a nightmare full of mayhem and murder" perfect for lovers of the mysterious and the macabre.

Netflix has revealed the actors who will star as the kooky family, including Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley.

The streaming giant recently released the ominous title sequence to showcase the mysterious nature of the upcoming series.

This comes after full-length trailers were posted on YouTube, showing the characters looking strikingly similar to the original cast.

The official teaser trailer for Wednesday first dropped on June 6, and gave fans a first look at Jenna as she embodies the titular character, with her signature braided pigtails and black polka dot dress with a white collar.

The episodic reboot of the popular 1991 franchise will be told from Wednesday’s perspective in the present-day setting.

But what else do we know about the Addams Family spin off? Keep reading to find out.

What is Wednesday about?

Netflix has described the show as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery” charting the young Wednesday Addams after she is expelled from her “normal” high school over an incident involving piranhas.

When she is sent to Nevermore Academy – a boarding school for outcasts, freaks and monsters – the raven-haired teen attempts to master her emerging psychic ability and thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town.

The iconic character also attempts to solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago, while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.

Who are the cast and crew?

While the series will be directed and executive produced by Burton, he will be joined by showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, who previously developed Smallville.

Gough told Vanity Fair he was “surprised” Burton agreed to navigate the coming-of-age comedy, and that he was swayed by its unique angle.

He said: “He was interested in where it was going, and the mystery of the show.

“He had a lot of questions about the previous television work we’d done, and how we were able to achieve it.

“He really loved that you had time to be with Wednesday and explore the character and you didn’t have to, you know, wrap things up in an hour and 45 minutes.”

“The ambition for the show was to make it an 8-hour Tim Burton movie,” Miller added.

Meanwhile, the bald and ghostly-pale Uncle Fester is played by Saturday Night Live and Portlandia funnyman Fred Armisen.

Other cast members include Romanian actor George Burcea as the Addams’ freakishly tall butler, Lurch, and Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie as Nevermore Principal Larissa Weems.

The show’s trailer also teases a role for Christina Ricci, who famously played Wednesday in 1991’s The Addams Family and its 1993 sequel Addams Family Values.

The Addams Family is well-known for its theme music, and this time is no different as Burton’s frequent collaborator Danny Elfman composed the show’s score.

They have worked together on a number of blockbusters including Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

When will Wednesday be released?

All eight episodes of Wednesday drop on Netflix on Wednesday, November 23 at 8am.
