Everything we know about Modern Warfare 4: Campaign, new Multiplayer maps, movement, and progression

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been officially confirmed, and it takes the series to Korea. Featuring the return of Captain Price, a dynamic Multiplayer map, updated movement, and gunplay, there’s a lot to go over.

Here’s everything we know about MW4, releasing on Oct. 23.

Everything we know about Modern Warfare 4

Campaign

The campaign takes the Modern Warfare series to a darker setting in the Korean Peninsula, where North Korea launches a full-scale invasion. In the meantime, Captain Price is now an outlaw following the events of MW3, and has to navigate the shadows, leading to a conflict with Ghost. Valeria is also back, but now seemingly as Price’s ally.

Among multiple locations featured in the campaign, expect trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, chases through Paris, night raids in Mumbai, and city-wide assaults.

Bloom and ballistics

In MW4, gunplay emphasizes precision and decisiveness. Bloom has been removed, making hipfire shots feel more direct, predictable, and connected. Recoil, convergence, and weapon handling have been rebuilt to reflect input better. Depth of Field and VFXs have been refined to improve enemy visibility.

Movement

There’s no omnimovement in Modern Warfare 4. Instead, the game expands options for mantling, climbing, hanging, and jumping, creating fluid movement to approach gunfights. There are some new mechanics, like the ability to slide over cars, slide to ADS, climb up pipes, and sprint and mantle assist. The tactical sprint and slide cancelling are also still there.

Multiplayer maps

MW4 features 12 core Multiplayer maps (including Transit 213 – the new Shipment), with additional maps for Gunfight and Big War. On top of that, there’s Kill Block – a dynamic map where the space reconfigures every round, with more than 500 distinct configurations.

Kill Block consists of three slabs/sections, each one a piece of an existing CoD map. Every slab is the size of a 2v2 map, and altogether Kill Block is the size of Shoothouse. At launch, Kill Block supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight formats, with support for more Multiplayer modes coming at a later date.

Loadouts and attachments

The new installment changes the Create-a-Class system, unifying Operators, weapons, Equipment, and Killstreaks into a single loadout. Gunsmith now also has a feature that automatically puts together weapon builds for your playstyle based on available attachments.

Speaking of attachments, MW4 introduces Apex Attachments that unlock after fully progressing the weapon and can change how the weapon plays, seemingly similar to some of the Prestige and special conversion attachments from Black Ops 7. Other notable things include the return of the Ninja perk and Riot Shield Field Upgrade.

Prestige

Prestige is back with two paths, each with its own set of rewards, depending on what you’re looking for in your experience. If you don’t want to lose access to your loadouts and unlocks, the Regular Prestige path allows you to do just that while still earning rewards.

Here are the Prestige paths in MW4:

  • Classic Prestige: Classic system that resets Create-a-Class progression in exchange for increased XP and exclusive rewards.
  • Regular Prestige: Resets to level one without locking Create-a-Class content, with a separate set of rewards.

DMZ

The DMZ extraction mode is back to the MW series. While there’s not much information available, your goal is to recover advanced military technology while navigating dynamic weather, military objectives, and hostile forces.

Release date and platforms

MW4 is coming to XBOX Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on Oct. 23. It won’t be available on last-gen consoles. For PC, the game features tailored performance optimizations and supports a wide range of hardware. This includes multiple upscaling and frame generation options (including DLSS 4.5), expanded graphics options, and competitive-focused settings to prioritize fps and responsiveness.
